I’ve been told that my grandfather, his brother, and another confederate pooled their resources (around the mid fifties, maybe?) and got a Pierce Arrow in need of some TLC. Some time later they sold it without telling him first, or something like that. So, no family heirloom Pierce Arrow.

That is so unfortunate . The good thing about Pierce Arrow is they are still relatively affordable compared to most pre war cars.

Which is odd, given their relative rarity and their prestige at the time, but both PAs and Packard 120s are plentiful enough that a pretty cherry example of either can be had for $60k or even less. One could even throw in a third “P” car and come out with three of the utmost in ‘30s Art Deco styling and luxury for under $200k:

I think to some extent the value of luxury cars led to a high survivor percentage in the ‘40s, which paradoxically can leave one comparatively undervalued vs. a *now* more rare pleb car sent to the scrap heaps in the dozens.

I think you have a point there. But I also think the market can only support so many pre-war luxury cars. The market for collector cars are ever expanding and with more options the pre-war luxury cars are yesterday’s news story. Still desirable but not the new kid on the block that everyone has to have.

Which is fine. Supply and demand will work their labors, and the available pool of customers for wacky parts will continue to grow as each craze adds to the whole, making it cheaper to get the car that one really wants (as long as it’s off-cycle), and making upkeep easier.
Not that I have ideas of dabbling in the bespoke parts market... but I kind of do.
